First Reading
1 Corinthians 11፡ 17-34
Now in this that I declare unto you I praise you not, that ye come together not for the
better, but for the worse. For first of all, when ye come together in the church, I hear
that there be divisions among you; and I partly believe it. For there must be also
heresies among you, that they which are approved may be made manifest among you.
When ye come together therefore into one place, this is not to eat the Lord's supper.
For in eating every one taketh before other his own supper: and one is hungry, and
another is drunken. What? have ye not houses to eat and to drink in? or despise ye the
church of God, and shame them that have not? What shall I say to you? shall I praise
you in this? I praise you not. For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered
unto you, That the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread: And
when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is
broken for you: this do in remembrance of me. After the same manner also he took the
cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye,
as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me. For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink
this cup, ye do shew the Lord's death till he come. Wherefore whosoever shall eat this
bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood
of the Lord. But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of
that cup. For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to
himself, not discerning the Lord's body. For this cause many are weak and sickly among
you, and many sleep. For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged. But
when we are judged, we are chastened of the Lord, that we should not be condemned
with the world. Wherefore, my brethren, when ye come together to eat, tarry one for
another. And if any man hunger, let him eat at home; that ye come not together unto
condemnation. And the rest will I set in order when I come.
Second Reading
James 2፡1-13
My brethren, have not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with respect
of persons. For if there come unto your assembly a man with a gold ring, in goodly
apparel, and there come in also a poor man in vile raiment; And ye have respect to him
that weareth the gay clothing, and say unto him, Sit thou here in a good place; and say
to the poor, Stand thou there, or sit here under my footstool: Are ye not then partial in
yourselves, and are become judges of evil thoughts? Hearken, my beloved brethren,
Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which
he hath promised to them that love him? But ye have despised the poor. Do not rich
men oppress you, and draw you before the judgment seats? Do not they blaspheme
that worthy name by the which ye are called? If ye fulfil the royal law according to the
scripture, thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well: But if ye have respect to
persons, ye commit sin, and are convinced of the law as transgressors. For whosoever
shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all. For he that said,
Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now if thou commit no adultery, yet if
thou kill, thou art become a transgressor of the law. So, speak ye, and so do, as they that
shall be judged by the law of liberty. For he shall have judgment without mercy, that
hath shewed no mercy; and mercy rejoiceth against judgment.
Gospel
John 1:15-37
John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, this was he of whom I spake, He that
cometh after me is preferred before me: for he was before me. And of his fulness have
all we received, and grace for grace. For the law was given by Moses, but grace and
truth came by Jesus Christ. No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son,
which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him. And this is the record of
John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who art thou?
And he confessed, and denied not; but confessed, I am not the Christ. And they asked
him, What then? Art thou Elias? And he saith, I am not. Art thou that prophet? And he
answered, No. Then said they unto him, who art thou? that we may give an answer to
them that sent us. What sayest thou of thyself? He said, I am the voice of one crying in
the wilderness, make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Esaias. And they
which were sent were of the Pharisees. And they asked him, and said unto him, why
baptizest thou then, if thou be not that Christ, nor Elias, neither that prophet? John
answered them, saying, I baptize with water: but there standeth one among you, whom
ye know not; He it is, who coming after me is preferred before me, whose shoe's latchet
I am not worthy to unloose. These things were done in Bethabara beyond Jordan, where
John was baptizing. The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold
the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world. This is he of whom I said, after
me cometh a man which is preferred before me: for he was before me. And I knew him
not: but that he should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with
water. And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a
dove, and it abode upon him. And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with
water, the same said unto me, upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and
remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost. And I saw, and
bare record that this is the Son of God. Again, the next day after John stood, and two of
his disciples; And looking upon Jesus as he walked, he saith, Behold the Lamb of God!
And the two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus.
