First Reading
Hebrews 12:12-21
Wherefore lift up the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees; And make straight
paths for your feet, lest that which is lame be turned out of the way; but let it rather be
healed. Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the
Lord: Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness
springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled; Lest there be any fornicator, or
profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright. For ye know
how that afterward, when he would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected: for he
found no place of repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears. For ye are not
come unto the mount that might be touched, and that burned with fire, nor unto
blackness, and darkness, and tempest, and the sound of a trumpet, and the voice of
words; which voice they that heard intreated that the word should not be spoken to
them any more: (For they could not endure that which was commanded, And if so much
as a beast touch the mountain, it shall be stoned, or thrust through with a dart: And so
terrible was the sight, that Moses said, I exceedingly fear and quake:)
Second Reading
2 Peter 1:19-21
We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as
unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in
your hearts: Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private
interpretation. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men
of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost
Gospel
John 10: 34-42
Jesus answered them, is it not written in your law, I said, Ye are gods? If he called them
gods, unto whom the word of God came, and the scripture cannot be broken; Say ye of
him, whom the Father hath sanctified, and sent into the world, thou blasphemest;
because I said, I am the Son of God? If I do not the works of my Father, believe me not.
But if I do, though ye believe not me, believe the works: that ye may know, and believe,
that the Father is in me, and I in him. Therefore, they sought again to take him: but he
escaped out of their hand, and went away again beyond Jordan into the place where
John at first baptized; and there he abode. And many resorted unto him, and said, John
did no miracle: but all things that John spake of this man were true. And many believed
on him there.
