First Reading
Galatians 4:21-31
Tell me, ye that desire to be under the law, do ye not hear the law? For it is written, that
Abraham had two sons, the one by a bondmaid, the other by a freewoman. But he who
was of the bondwoman was born after the flesh; but he of the freewoman was by
promise. Which things are an allegory: for these are the two covenants; the one from the
mount Sinai, which gendereth to bondage, which is Agar? For this Agar is mount Sinai in
Arabia, and answereth to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children.
But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all. For it is written,
Rejoice, thou barren that bearest not; break forth and cry, thou that travailest not: for
the desolate hath many more children than she which hath an husband. Now we,
brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise. But as then he that was born after
the flesh persecuted him that was born after the Spirit, even so it is now. Nevertheless,
what saith the scripture? Cast out the bondwoman and her son: for the son of the
bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman. So then, brethren, we are
not children of the bondwoman, but of the free.

1 Peter 2:1-8
Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil
speakings, as newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow
thereby: If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious. To whom coming, as unto a
living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious, Ye also, as
lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual
sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ. Wherefore also it is contained in the
scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth
on him shall not be confounded. Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but
unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is
made the head of the corner, And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to
them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were
appointed.
Gospel
Luke 2: 42-52
And when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the
feast. And when they had fulfilled the days, as they returned, the child Jesus tarried
behind in Jerusalem; and Joseph and his mother knew not of it. But they, supposing him
to have been in the company, went a day's journey; and they sought him among their
kinsfolk and acquaintance. And when they found him not, they turned back again
to Jerusalem, seeking him. And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in
the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them
questions. And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers.
And when they saw him, they were amazed: and his mother said unto him, Son, why
hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing. And
he said unto them, how is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my
Father's business? And they understood not the saying which he spake unto them.
And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them: but
his mother kept all these sayings in her heart. And Jesus increased in wisdom and
stature, and in favour with God and man.
