First Reading
Hebrews 12:25-29
See that ye refuse not him that speaketh. For if they escaped not who refused him that
spake on earth, much more shall not we escape, if we turn away from him that speaketh
from heaven: Whose voice then shook the earth: but now he hath promised, saying, Yet
once more I shake not the earth only, but also heaven. And this word, yet once more,
signifieth the removing of those things that are shaken, as of things that are made, that
those things which cannot be shaken may remain. Wherefore we receiving a kingdom
which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with
reverence and godly fear: For our God is a consuming fire.
Second Reading
James 3:4-12
Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet
are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth. Even
so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter
a little fire kindleth! And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among
our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature;
and it is set on fire of hell. For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of
things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind: But the tongue can no
man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. Therewith bless we God, even the
Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God. Out of
the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not
so to be. Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter? Can the
fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? either a vine, figs? so can no fountain both yield
salt water and fresh.
Gospel
Matthew 8:23-34
And when he was entered into a ship, his disciples followed him. And, behold, there
arose a great tempest in the sea, insomuch that the ship was covered with the waves:
but he was asleep. And his disciples came to him, and awoke him, saying, Lord, save us:
we perish.
26 And he saith unto them, why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? Then he arose, and
rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm. But the men marveled,
saying, what manner of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him! And
when he was come to the other side into the country of the Gergesenes, there met him
two possessed with devils, coming out of the tombs, exceeding fierce, so that no man
might pass by that way. 29 And, behold, they cried out, saying, what have we to do with
thee, Jesus, thou Son of God? art thou come hither to torment us before the time? And
there was a good way off from them a herd of many swine feeding. So, the devils
besought him, saying, if thou cast us out, suffer us to go away into the herd of swine.
And he said unto them, Go. And when they were come out, they went into the herd of
swine: and, behold, the whole herd of swine ran violently down a steep place into the
sea, and perished in the waters. And they that kept them fled, and went their ways into
the city, and told everything, and what was befallen to the possessed of the devils. And,
behold, the whole city came out to meet Jesus: and when they saw him, they besought
him that he would depart out of their coasts.
