First Reading
Colossians 1:12-29
Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the
inheritance of the saints in light: Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and
hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son: In whom we have redemption
through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins: Who is the image of the invisible God,
the firstborn of every creature: For by him were all things created, that are in heaven,
and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or
principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: And he is before all
things, and by him all things consist. And he is the head of the body, the church: who is
the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the
preeminence. For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell; And, having
made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself;
by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven. And you, that were
sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he
reconciled In the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable
and unreproveable in his sight: If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be
not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was
preached to every creature which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister;
Who now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up that which is behind of the
afflictions of Christ in my flesh for his body's sake, which is the church: Whereof I am
made a minister, according to the dispensation of God which is given to me for you, to
fulfil the word of God; Even the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from
generations, but now is made manifest to his saints: To whom God would make known
what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you,
the hope of glory: Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all
wisdom; that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus: Whereunto I also labour,
striving according to his working, which worketh in me mightily.
Second Reading
1 Peter 1:13-20
Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace
that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; As obedient children, not
fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance: But as he which
hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; Because it is written,
Be ye holy; for I am holy. And if ye call on the Father, who without respect of persons
judgeth according to every man's work, pass the time of your sojourning here in fear:
Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and
gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; But with the
precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot: Who verily was
foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times
for you,
Gospel
John 5:16-27
And therefore, did the Jews persecute Jesus, and sought to slay him, because he had
done these things on the sabbath day. But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh
hitherto, and I work. Therefore, the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not
only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself
equal with God. Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you,
The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things so
ever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise. For the Father loveth the Son, and
sheweth him all things that himself doeth: and he will shew him greater works than
these, that ye may marvel. For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them;
even so the Son quickeneth whom he will. For the Father judgeth no man, but hath
committed all judgment unto the Son: That all men should honour the Son, even as they
honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath
sent him. Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him
that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed
from death unto life. Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when
the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live. For as the
Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself; And hath
given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man.
