First Reading
1 Corinthians 2:1-11
And I, brethren, when I came to you, came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom,
declaring unto you the testimony of God. For I determined not to know anything among
you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified. And I was with you in weakness, and in fear,
and in much trembling. And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words
of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power: That your faith
should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God. Howbeit we speak
wisdom among them that are perfect: yet not the wisdom of this world, nor of the
princes of this world, that come to nought: But we speak the wisdom of God in a
mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory:
Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not
have crucified the Lord of glory. But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard,
neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for
them that love him. But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit
searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God. For what man knoweth the things of a
man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man,
but the Spirit of God.
Second Reading
1 Peter 2:20-25
For what glory is it, if, when ye be buffeted for your faults, ye shall take it patiently? but if,
when ye do well, and suffer for it, ye take it patiently, this is acceptable with God. For even
hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye
should follow his steps: Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth: Who, when
he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed
himself to him that judgeth righteously: Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on
the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye
were healed. For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd
and Bishop of your souls.
Gospel
Luke 9:18-27
And it came to pass, as he was alone praying, his disciples were with him: and he asked
them, saying, whom say the people that I am? They answering said, John the Baptist; but
some say, Elias; and others say, that one of the old prophets is risen again. He said unto
them, but whom say ye that I am? Peter answering said, The Christ of God. And he
straitly charged them, and commanded them to tell no man that thing; Saying, The Son
of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders and chief priests and
scribes, and be slain, and be raised the third day. And he said to them all, If any man will
come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me. For
whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the
same shall save it. For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose
himself, or be cast away? For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of
him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he shall come in his own glory, and in his
Father's, and of the holy angels. But I tell you of a truth, there be some standing here,
which shall not taste of death, till they see the kingdom of God.
