First Reading
1 Timothy 5:9-15
Let not a widow be taken into the number under threescore years old, having been the
wife of one man, Well reported of for good works; if she have brought up children, if she
have lodged strangers, if she have washed the saints' feet, if she have relieved the
afflicted, if she have diligently followed every good work. But the younger widows
refuse: for when they have begun to wax wanton against Christ, they will marry; Having
damnation, because they have cast off their first faith. And withal they learn to be idle,
wandering about from house to house; and not only idle, but tattlers also and
busybodies, speaking things which they ought not. I will therefore that the younger
women marry, bear children, guide the house, give none occasion to the adversary to
speak reproachfully. For some are already turned aside after Satan.
Second Reading
James 3:11-18
Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter? Can the fig tree,
my brethren, bear olive berries? either a vine, figs? so can no fountain both yield salt
water and fresh. Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him
shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom. But if ye have
bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth. his
wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish. For where envying
and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work. But the wisdom that is from above is
first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits,
without partiality, and without hypocrisy. And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace
of them that make peace.
Gospel
Matthew 8:16-27
When the even was come, they brought unto him many that were possessed with devils:
and he cast out the spirits with his word, and healed all that were sick: That it might be
fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities,
and bare our sicknesses. Now when Jesus saw great multitudes about him, he gave
commandment to depart unto the other side. And a certain scribe came, and said unto
him, Master, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest. And Jesus saith unto him, the
foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where
to lay his head. And another of his disciples said unto him, Lord, suffer me first to go
and bury my father But Jesus said unto him, follow me; and let the dead bury their dead.
And when he was entered into a ship, his disciples followed him. And, behold, there
arose a great tempest in the sea, insomuch that the ship was covered with the waves:
but he was asleep. And his disciples came to him, and awoke him, saying, Lord, save us:
we perish. And he saith unto them, why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? Then he arose,
and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm. But the men marveled,
saying, what manner of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him!
